TWN Week ending 4th October 2026
Africa must unite or perish
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah said it in Addis Ababa on 24 May 1963. Today those words still echo in our hearts, and we have no choice but to unite, because we are perishing already.
Until Africans see each other as one, the divisions planted by outside influence over generations will keep undermining our economies, stability, peace and development, and the progress that could be taking shape right now. TWN News wishes Nigerians and all African people could realise the power of unity and oneness.
The invisible shackles of colonial and prejudicial mentality are still ruining Nigeria and Africa. People must come together to defeat the real enemy, whether it is poverty, crime, insecurity, poor infrastructure or the lack of economic independence. Total independence for Congo, Sudan and all of Africa must stay on the agenda.
Peace deals signed, but fighting goes on in the east
The UN Security Council met on 29 September as clashes between government forces and M23 rebels continued despite the Washington Accords and the Doha framework. Diplomats also flagged rising DRC-Rwanda tension and the country's worst recorded Ebola outbreak, with more than 8,000 confirmed cases and 3,901 deaths as of 26 September. MONUSCO's mandate is up for renewal in December.
Army claims a key RSF stronghold in Kordofan
Sudan's army said on 2 October it had retaken al-Mazroub in North Kordofan, described as the RSF's largest stronghold there. The war is in its fourth year, and UN investigators earlier this year found "hallmarks of genocide" in the RSF takeover of El Fasher. Civilians remain the ones paying the price.
Ethiopia and Eritrea cut diplomatic ties
Ethiopia closed its embassy in Asmara and expelled ten Eritrean diplomats on 1 October, accusing Eritrea of backing armed groups; Eritrea cut ties in response. Fighting involving the TPLF has intensified across Tigray, Afar and Amhara, and the African Union and UN are urging restraint. Asmara denies the allegations.
Tinubu's 66th Independence address
President Tinubu addressed the nation on 1 October, saying the economy grew by more than 4% in 2026, inflation has fallen from its peak and reserves have risen. He defended his reforms despite the hardship Nigerians feel, and said student loans will keep poor Nigerians in higher institutions.
2027 campaign talk heats up
Calls grew for violence-free campaigns, CAN cautioned politicians against weaponising religion and ethnicity, and INEC began recruiting ad hoc staff for the 2027 elections. The president also signed the amendment extending the 2025 budget's implementation to 31 December 2026.
Abduction and communal clashes
Adebayo demanded rescue of abducted NYSC members and a security overhaul. In Anambra, five people were killed when a boundary dispute sparked an inter-communal clash. Plateau Governor Mutfwang met the president and said those behind recent attacks are being prosecuted.
Stocks dip in a holiday-shortened week
The NGX All-Share Index fell 0.52% over four trading days to 250,808.27, after three weeks of gains. Bank stocks led Friday's 0.16% slide, but the market is still up 61.17% this year. The CBN cut its policy rate by 350 basis points to 23% on 22 September, and September's PMI hit 56.4, the highest since 2022.
Ebola watch continues
With the DRC outbreak still growing, NCDC has kept Nigeria on high preparedness alert. Dr. Obi Adigwe's NHTDAO appointment by President Tinubu remains a talking point in the sector. Writers this week also urged early prostate and cervical cancer screening.
Super Falcons camp opens in Ijebu-Ode
Interim coach Augustine Eguavoen's 28 invited players reported to camp in Ijebu-Ode on 3 October for the Olympic qualifier against Comoros, at Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne-Remo, on 9 and 13 October.
Banke Kuku debuts at Milan Fashion Week
The Nigerian label showed "The Invitation" on 2 October in its first appearance at Milan Fashion Week.
