In Loving Memory of Mr. Jelili Koleosho

Called to rest on Friday, 16 October 2026

This week, the TWN News family pauses to honour a dear friend. Mr. Jelili Koleosho left us on Friday, the 16th of October, and the space he leaves among those who knew him cannot easily be filled.

Friends like him are not measured in headlines. They are measured in the warmth of a greeting, the steadiness of a presence and the memories we now hold close. We are grateful for the time we shared with him.

To his family, friends and loved ones, we offer our deepest condolences. May you find comfort in the love he gave and in the countless lives he touched.

Rest in peace, Mr. Jelili Koleosho. Gone from sight, never from memory.

HEALTH

1Nigeria confirms first Ebola case in about a decade

The Federal Government confirmed one Ebola case in Abuja on Tuesday, 20 October. Health Minister Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate said the patient, a woman diplomat who travelled from Uganda, is in isolation and receiving care, with 44 close contacts identified and under monitoring.

The NCDC and the WHO say the virus is the Bundibugyo strain, the same one driving the deadly outbreak in DR Congo. There is currently no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for it. Officials say she arrived in Abuja on 3 October, developed symptoms on 7 October and was admitted to a private hospital on 11 October. Reports say her condition has deteriorated. The ministry notes the place of exposure is still under investigation.

The Senate and House of Representatives have called for emergency funds to be released, and the Minister points to Nigeria’s 2014 success in stopping Ebola as grounds for confidence. NCDC toll-free line: 6232 (24 hours). Report suspected cases early and avoid contact with the blood or body fluids of anyone who is ill.

POLITICS

22027 build-up heats up as the hunger debate sharpens

President Tinubu blamed the opposition for hunger and poverty this week, and Atiku Abubakar hit back, calling the President delusional. Supporters are targeting 10,000 people for the President’s campaign flag-off in Kaduna.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah backed the removal of the fuel subsidy, saying a return to the old arrangement is not an option. Newspaper front pages also reported progress towards state police, a debate about how Nigeria organises its security.

ECONOMY

3Inflation eases to 14.63%, but food still bites and labour is restless

Headline inflation has now fallen for four straight months, reaching 14.63%. Food prices are still 19.59% higher than a year ago, and core inflation rose 1.11% month on month, which helps explain why prices feel stubborn at the market.

The Nigeria Labour Congress began a two-week ultimatum on 9 October demanding lower petrol prices and the start of minimum wage renegotiation, and has rejected the Federal Government’s reply dated 13 October. The Government earlier announced a ₦1,350 ceiling on the ex-gantry price of petrol and a 30-day petrol discount. With crude near $110 a barrel, pressure on pump prices remains.

MARKETS

4NGX ends a fourth weak week, but Friday rebounds

The All-Share Index slipped 0.13% over the week to 247,222.27 points, a fourth straight weekly decline. Friday brought a rebound of 0.92% as buying in bellwether stocks added ₦1.47 trillion, lifting market capitalisation to ₦160.52 trillion.

Dangote Cement and First HoldCo each gained 10% on Friday, with First HoldCo helped by a nine-month profit surge. Fidelity Bank rose 14.01% over the week. Losses in oil and gas, insurance and banking stocks outweighed gains in industrials.

NATION

5Delta mourns former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan

Former Delta State Governor Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan died on Monday, 19 October, at the age of 71, after a brief illness in an Abuja hospital. He governed Delta State from 2007 to 2015.

President Tinubu described the loss as a great one for Delta State and Nigeria, and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led tributes from across the political divide. Delta State declared three days of mourning.

SPORTS

6Osimhen sets a Nigerian Champions League record

Victor Osimhen scored in Galatasaray’s 4-2 win at Lille on Wednesday and was named UEFA Player of the Match. The goal took him to 17 Champions League goals, the most by any Nigerian, with Ademola Lookman and Obafemi Martins level on nine. He is also the first Nigerian to score in the competition for three different clubs.

ENTERTAINMENT

7Music stars back sickle cell care

Adekunle Gold and Pesa committed $20,000 to sickle cell organisations this week, a welcome reminder that Nigeria’s entertainers are using their platforms for good. Elsewhere, Spotify has brought audiobooks to Nigeria, opening up a new way for listeners to enjoy stories.

AFRICA

8One continent, one health fight

DR Congo’s outbreak has passed 9,000 confirmed cases and 4,381 deaths since mid-May, and Kenya has confirmed nine cases. Africa CDC says it has begun mobilising support for Nigeria. Viruses ignore the borders drawn for us, and our response should too. This is the TWN News message again: Africa is stronger, safer and wealthier when it acts as one.

Food for Thought

Life is a desert storm: sudden, shifting, and indifferent to fair or unfair. We enter with the clock already running, and when the final second falls, the game ends. So live in a way that works for you, that delights you, that feels worth it. Because when our time comes, all that remains is how we chose to spend it.
