Dolly Parton — A Pure Bundle of Laughter, Joy and Truth

Born: 19 January 1946 · Sevierville, Tennessee · Singer, Songwriter, Author, Philanthropist, National Treasure

There are few people in the world of music — or indeed in the world — who are quite like Dolly Parton. What you see is what you get. She has never pretended to be something she isn't. She tells it like it is — in her music, in her interviews, in her daily life — with a warmth, a wit, and a wisdom that has made her one of the most beloved human beings on the planet. She is a true pure bundle of laughter and joy, and TWN News celebrates her today.

From the Tennessee mountains to the stages of the world, Dolly has given us music that transcends time, language, and culture. She is one of our all-time favourites — and two songs in particular hold a very special place in our hearts:

🎵 "Islands in the Stream" — with Kenny Rogers · 1983 · A duet that became an instant classic. Two voices, one perfect chemistry. The kind of song that stops you wherever you are and makes you smile. Kenny and Dolly — what a pair. What a gift to the world.
🎵 "I Will Always Love You" — Written and originally recorded by Dolly · 1973 · But made global by the incomparable Whitney Houston in 1992. Dolly wrote that song. Let that sink in. And when Whitney sang it, Dolly said: "Nobody will ever do it better than that." Only a truly great artist applauds another so generously. That is the spirit of Dolly Parton.
"It costs a lot of money to look this cheap." — Dolly Parton 😄

"If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain." — Dolly Parton

Beyond the music, Dolly has donated over 200 million books to children around the world through her Imagination Library programme. She helped fund one of the first COVID-19 vaccines. She has never sought political office, never weaponised her fame for division — she has simply served and loved. She is funny, fearless, faithful, and genuinely fabulous. From TWN News — we love you, Dolly! 🌈💛🎸

NGX Snaps 11-Session Losing Streak — FTSE Russell Reclassification Triggers Rally; Investors Gain ₦1.29 Trillion

After two clear weeks that witnessed 11 consecutive sessions of losses, Nigerian equities returned to positive territory in a shortened four-day trading week ended August 28, with the benchmark NGX All-Share Index rising 1,947.31 points, or 0.81%, to close at 241,298.47 points. The strong rebound came on the heels of FTSE Russell's confirmation of a September 21 reclassification of Nigeria under its Frontier Market Index — a development that lifted market sentiment sharply from Thursday August 27, as institutional investors rushed to position ahead of the formal upgrade. The benchmark NGX ASI surged 0.90% on Friday to close at 241,298.47, with market capitalisation rising to ₦155.83 trillion from ₦154.44 trillion — adding approximately ₦1.38 trillion to investor wealth. Friday produced 33 gainers against 19 decliners, with banking, Oil & Gas and commodity stocks all participating, and trading volume increasing 21.04% to 605.17 million shares. The year-to-date return held firm at 55.06%. Analysts say the FTSE upgrade — Nigeria's return from "Unclassified" to Frontier Market status — could open the door to significant foreign portfolio inflows in Q4 2026.

CNG Expansion Accelerates; Ghost Workers Audit Launched; Kilishi Tipped as Nigeria's Next Big Business Opportunity

The Federal Government is deploying a major CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) expansion programme — with the ADC suggesting the push is partly driven by electoral pressure ahead of 2027, though the government insists it is driven by economic necessity and energy diversification. The Federal Government has also ordered a forensic audit of IPPIS and other payroll agencies over ghost workers, with sources confirming billions in monthly fraud may be uncovered. In economic opportunity news, analysts say kilishi — Nigeria's traditional spiced dried meat — could be Nigeria's next big business opportunity worth billions, urging government and private sector investment in processing, packaging, and export of the beloved northern delicacy. The BoI's maiden development bond, which was oversubscribed last week, is also now being widely cited as proof of deepening investor trust in Nigeria's development finance architecture.

2027: Storm in Opposition Camp; Yari Emerges APC Campaign DG; Tinubu Celebrates Fasoranti at 100

A fresh crisis is brewing in the opposition camp ahead of the 2027 single-candidate summit, with Atiku's ADC, Peter Obi's NDC and the Obi/Kwankwaso OK Movement all experiencing internal turbulence. The OK Movement is facing moves to remove its founder John Ughulu as Director-General and resist a merger with the NDC. Ex-Governor Yari emerged as APC Presidential Campaign Council Director-General, with Uzodimma as Secretary — a signal that the ruling party is beginning to formally structure its 2027 machinery. President Tinubu celebrated Yoruba leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti on his 100th birthday, hailing his contributions to Nigeria's unity and nation-building — a moment of genuine national reflection. Voters told Tinubu, Atiku, and Obi to show them how they will fix Nigeria, with civic groups demanding issue-based campaigns rather than personality contests.

Troops Neutralise Terrorists in Sokoto; Rig Count Rises as NNPCL GMD Drives Upstream Revival; Nepal Floods Kill 579

Troops neutralised two terrorists and recovered weapons and motorcycles in Sokoto State this week, as Operation HADIN KAI continues its pressure on Boko Haram remnants and ISWAP factions across the northwest. Nigeria's rig count is rising as NNPCL GMD Bayo Ojulari drives an aggressive upstream revival strategy — offering hope that Nigeria can sustain the 1.56 million barrel-per-day output achieved earlier in the year. An Abuja building collapse trapped two residents who were subsequently rescued, highlighting ongoing structural safety concerns in the capital. Globally, Nepal flash floods killed 579 people with nearly 2,000 missing — a humanitarian catastrophe drawing international emergency response.

FG Deploys 500,000 Vaccines as Diphtheria Outbreak Hits Katsina and Kano; Media Urged to Fight for Women and Children's Health Rights

The Federal Government deployed 500,000 vaccines as a diphtheria outbreak hit Katsina and Kano states — a fast-moving response to contain a disease that has proved deadly for children in previous outbreaks. Health authorities are urging parents in affected communities to present their children for vaccination immediately. The outbreak is a reminder of the critical importance of routine immunisation coverage across all 36 states.

A NOUN professor urged the media to fight for women and children's health rights, calling on journalists to put health equity stories at the centre of public discourse. On digital health, the National Health Technology and Data Analytics Office (NHTDAO) under Dr. Obi Adigwe continues to build the interoperability framework that will underpin Nigeria's next generation of health data systems — work that is becoming increasingly urgent as outbreaks like the Katsina diphtheria situation demand fast, accurate data responses from health authorities.

"Highways of Horror" — Record Budgets But Roads Still Kill; Alia Plans to Upgrade Benue College; Katsina Ends Guesswork in Development Planning

A major investigation this week exposed Nigeria's "Highways of Horror" — documenting how record federal and state road allocations continue to coexist with some of the world's most dangerous road conditions, raising deep questions about contract management, supervision, and accountability in road infrastructure spending. The investigation found that despite billions in annual allocation, many federal highway sections remain death traps. Benue State Governor Alia announced plans to upgrade the Oju Education College and revive the Igumale Cement Factory — a twin infrastructure intervention aimed at boosting education capacity and industrialisation in the state. Katsina State Governor Radda announced the end of "guesswork" in development planning, unveiling a data-driven governance framework that will tie budget allocation to verified community needs and outcome tracking.

NFF President Gusau Resigns; EFCC Probe of ₦12bn Fund Continues — The House of Nigerian Football Must Be Rebuilt

NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau resigned on Thursday after nearly four years in office, citing consultations with family and stakeholders. The EFCC confirmed its investigation into the ₦12 billion federal intervention fund will continue despite the leadership changes. The funds were released in January 2024 to clear outstanding player bonuses, yet complaints over unpaid entitlements persisted across several national teams. The Super Falcons have also now missed the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup — eliminated by South Africa in the qualifying playoffs — the first time in history they have failed to qualify for the tournament. An NFF Elective Congress is scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State, which must now produce genuinely transformative leadership for Nigerian football.

Nigeria's Music Stars Should Own Football Clubs — It's Time to Reinvent Nigerian Football

Nigerian football is broken at the administrative level. The NFF ₦12bn scandal, two straight World Cup absences for the Super Eagles, the Super Falcons missing the Women's World Cup — these are not accidents. They are the product of a governance culture that treats football as a patronage system rather than a professional sport. The house must be rebuilt from the foundations up.

But here is where Nigeria has an extraordinary, untapped opportunity. Nigeria already has the world's most exciting music industry. Its artists command global audiences. Davido, Burna Boy, Asake, Wizkid — these men have built empires. Tems, Simi, Tiwa Savage — these women have global platforms and commercial clout. What if Nigeria's biggest entertainers became its biggest football investors?

⚽ Davido FC Lagos? Imagine a club backed by the 30BG nation — 12 million social media followers as your built-in fanbase before you kick a ball.
⚽ Burna Boy United? The African Giant already tours the world. A club bearing his brand would sell shirts from Lagos to London to Los Angeles.
⚽ Asake City FC? The fastest-rising superstar in Afrobeats — imagine his energy in a matchday atmosphere in a packed Lagos stadium.
⚽ Tems Foundation FC? Women's football needs women's investment. Tems + Simi + Tiwa Savage as co-owners of a women's club would be transformative for the Super Falcons pipeline.

Look at what Formula One did for Nigeria's speedboat racing scene — the Ijele Powerboat Race brought the world to Lagos. Water racing became a festival. Football, with 200 million passionate fans, should be doing the same. Lagos should host an annual Super Cup match. Abuja should hold international friendly tournaments. Nigerian clubs should play in European pre-season. But none of this happens without private investment, professional management, and genuine accountability.

The model exists. In the US, Jay-Z part-owns sporting franchises. Ryan Reynolds bought Wrexham. Patrick Mahomes co-owns the Kansas City Royals. Nigerian entertainers have the wealth, the global reach, and the cultural capital to do exactly the same. The NFF should be actively courting them — not as sponsors but as equity owners with seats at the table and genuine accountability for results.

TWN News calls on the next NFF leadership to open the door wide to private ownership, entertainers, corporations, and the diaspora. Nigeria's football future must be built on business principles, transparency, and accountability — not on sharing ₦12 billion among officials. The talent is there. The fans are there. What Nigerian football needs is the will to be great. 🇳🇬⚽🎵

⚽ JS Darinho Sports Academy — Where the Future Starts

As Nigeria reckons with its football governance failures, JS Darinho Sports Academy — founded by Dare Osunsanya — is quietly doing the work that matters most: developing young talent at the grassroots through the Ijebu Premier League and structured coaching. World's Youngest Reigning King Dies at 34; 10 Nigerians to be Deported from US; BBNaija Drama as Chichi Drags Phyna; Pastor Eze Gifts Rover

The world's youngest reigning king, the Oyo of Tooro, died at 34 — a profound loss for the Tooro Kingdom in Uganda and for Africa's traditional royal heritage. Ten more Nigerians face deportation from the US for diverse crimes — continuing a difficult period in Nigeria-US relations over irregular migration and criminal conduct. In entertainment, BBNaija's Chichi publicly dragged Phyna over her beef with Ashmus — the latest social media drama from the 2026 season that continues to dominate online conversation. On an uplifting note, Pastor Jerry Eze gifted a brand new Range Rover this week — drawing widespread reaction across social media. Yiaga Africa also announced plans to hold 130 election observer trainings ahead of the 2027 elections, as civic preparedness for the polls intensifies.
